We meet up with Guillem Rodriguez at his studio, inside MODA22 studio, on Carrer de Llull. Some plants, oozing natural light and a stunning mood board compose his workspace. He’s just arrived from Mexico, where he showed his last collection “Vulnérable” at Unimoda. It was a great experience – he tells us – you learn a lot from such a different culture.
He shows us the collection. We immediately feel the quality of materials and finishes. They really stand out, thanks to the skills learnt at school and the mentoring of his pattern maker – a very important figure on the process of production of my collections – he explains.
It all came together to Guillem. Having just finished the fashion design course at BAU, he won the ModaFAD prize. It arrived very unexpectedly – he tells us. The conformation of his brand and identity wasn’t actually something he urgently looked for, it somehow came as a consequence. He also found it quite hard having to think of what he created as something that could be a business.
Collaborations with the bag designer Ingrid Pou, and photographers such as Sergi B. Garcia and Jaume Illa demonstrate his passion for working with others. It is always a win-win situation that comes especially handy in recession times. He finds he always learns something new from the other creative.
He explains how the next collection, “Manifesto” the one he is currently working on, will be a start of a new phase of his design career. Although he tries to work following his intuition and, although the previous collections were a result of something he needed to experiment as a designer, he feels the need of expressing the expansion he is experimenting. An evolution to something stronger, with a mix of technologic materials and leather. A real declaration of intentions.
