One of the best things to edit a magazine is to receive emails like the one that Silvia Conde sent us two weeks ago about her project Soft Skin. I did click and her world of skin, sense and sensibility caught my mind. That art director from Barcelona that lives in Berlin, created a group in Flickr two years ago in order to collect all the pictures she loved. The community grew quickly and actually, she has created a gallery and a fanzine with some of the best pictures from Soft Skin. She just has launched the first issue, in a limited edition of 50 with an original picture and a postcard, everything “handmade and lovemade”, adds Silvia in her Etsy account. I’ve bought mine last Friday! And just 17 remain. Ah! And if your pictures are Soft Skin, you can start sending them for Soft Skin’s issue #2 / Summer 2013.
I send Silvia some questions via email to know a little bit more about that amazing project. I’m curious…
What does Soft Skin means?
Soft Skin means pure and sensitive photography, a little bit fragile, soft and with touches of shyness and innocence.
¿Why did you create the group on Flickr?
I started the group in 2011, when I realised that many of my favourite pictures shared a lot of things…well, one over the others: the skin. I did just for me, in order to have all of them together somewhere online. But then some people started to follow the group and I received kind support emails. So it encouraged me and at the beginning of this year, with more than 1000 pictures in the group, I thought it worth to do something else and then I created the Tumblr and the printed fanzine.
¿What kind of values we can find in Soft Skin?
Beauty and sensibility, love and authenticity as well. It is a project really delicate, that I love to take care of it. Most of the pictures are from amateur photographers, they simply take pictures for pleasure.
¿Could you choose 3 of your favourite pictures?
Oh, it is really difficult, yes…Well, maybe I will get the beautiful picture of Abby Beatrice Quick, published in the first issue of Soft Skin’s fanzine. As well I will get some of Irina Munteanu, a photographer with an extremly beautiful collection that reflects really well the Soft Skin’s nature. And the third one could be Margaret Durow. That three are good samples of that kind of beauty and sensibility, all of them are shy pictures that suggest something.
¿What do you do as an art director?
I’m graduated in Advertising and Public Relations in Barcelona’s UPF two years ago. I’m specialized in Art Direction because it is what I was more interested for. I did some internships in the city, MrJohnSample and SCFP. After I left to Berlín to learn Deutsch. I’ve lived there for two years, meanwhile I wrote a blog and I developed the graphic image for a coffe shop. Actually I write about photography in Positive Magazine, and I develop personal projects and small format exhibitions. Now I’m starting to work in a print magazine that we will launch in some months.
When I was exploring the pictures of Soft Skin I realised that they could be pictures from the same photographer althought they come from different sources…¿Do you think we are going to some kind of collective authorship?
I really like this question, because I’m totally agree with it. When one looks to the gallery, it is possible to think that all the pictures have been taken by the same person and that it is the personal Tumblr of an artist. In fact, some people has though that. There are so many people making pictures that there competition and it’s hard to create your own name. However, projects like that have followers because you can have everything together. And at the same time, without them Soft Skin hadn’t been possible. Besides Soft Skin, we can find another interesting projects of collective authorship like It is a river or Tumblrs like The Poetic Photography Collection.
Y para terminar, y dedicado a nuestro espíritu #flowerpower, hemos hecho una pequeña selección de algunas de las fotos de Soft Skin en las que también aparecen flores. ¡Feliz semana!
